SUMMARY:The Diamond Heart: Interiority\, Symbols\, Soul and Presence
DESCRIPTION:This talk is a synopsis of some key papers\, and themes\, from Julienne’s recent book\, ‘The Diamond Heart – Jungian Psychology and the Christian Mystical Tradition’ (2023). She introduces the ancient\, Christian notion of interiority\, from the writings of the 5thC theologian and philosopher\, St Augustine of Hippo\, and discuss Jung’s map of the soul as a continuation of this ancient tradition\, as modern path of interiority towards self-knowledge and transformation. \nIn this paper\, key Jungian themes relating to transformation of our shadow\, the structure and function of symbols of transformation and the path of individuation are explored. Five major symbols of transformation from the 16th C Christian mystical text\, ‘The Interior Castle’ by St Teresa of Avila – castle\, garden\, water\, fountains and butterfly – are discussed\, from psychological and spiritual perspectives\, and concludes with reflections from Thomas Merton\, the 20thC American theologian and writer\, on the mystery of Presence in the centre of our soul. \n Julienne McLean practices as a psychologist\, Jungian analyst and training supervisor in north London\, and has been in private practice for nearly 30 years. She has had a lifelong involvement in Christian spirituality\, with a particular interest in the interface between Jungian psychology and the Christian mystical tradition. She has taught on AJA’s Jungian Analytic Training for Qualified Psychotherapists\, at St Mary’s University\, Strawberry Hill\, London and Sarum College\, Salisbury\, where she is a Visiting Scholar in Christian Spirituality.  \n Since 2018\, she has been involved with the Centre for Applied Carmelite Spirituality\, Oxford\, on the Carmelite Spiritual Direction Formation Programme. She is the author of ‘Towards Mystical Union’ (2003\, 2013\, 2017\, St Pauls) a commentary on ‘The Interior Castle’ and ‘The Diamond Heart – Jungian Psychology and the Christian Mystical Tradition’ (2023\, Chiron)\, a collection of her papers and talks over 25 years.

Proof of the life of an idea is that it can enter into other people and their ‘becoming’. The theme of this lecture and conference is to illustrate how ‘meeting oneself’ can be\, as Bion says\, a passionate learning experience. \nA film based on Bion’s autobiographies\, The Becoming Room\, written and directed by Meg Harris Williams\, will be shown online on Friday evening. This will form the starting point for her lecture on Saturday\, followed by a panel discussion with Vera Regina Fonseca Montagna\, Vivienne Pasieka\, Anne Lise Scappaticci and Alison Vaspe\, who will each present their own review of specific clinical situations as filtered through both the film and Bion’s ideas\, in a way which clarifies their autobiographical significance. A book is forthcoming using these ideas and experiences\, entitled Our Eternal Home: Bion’s Idea of the Self\, published by Routledge. \nBiographies: \nMeg Harris Williams is a writer on literature and psychoanalysis and a visual artist. Her books include The Aesthetic Development: The Poetic Spirit of Psychoanalysis\, Bion’s Dream: A Reading of the Autobiographies\, and The Becoming Room: Filming Bion’s Memoir of the Future. \nVera Regina Fonseca Montagna is a Clinical Psychologist with pre-clinical training at the Tavistock Clinic (1975-1976) and experience as a Child Psychotherapist at the Epson Child Guidance Clinic\, Surrey. A Full Member of the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of São Paulo (IPA)\, she teaches at the Institute of Psychoanalysis and maintains a private practice. Additionally\, she is a visual artist and has published essays on psychoanalysis\, aesthetic experience\, and creativity. \nVivienne Pasieka is a psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist in private child and adult practice. Trained in Ireland and Canada\, she is a member of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (IPA)\, faculty member of the Toronto Psychoanalytic Institute and Chair of Between Hours: Inter-disciplinary Dialogues\, Toronto Psychoanalytic Society\, and Freud Café Canada. \nAnne Lise Scappaticci is a clinical psychologist trained at La Sapienza University of Rome\, a Full Member and Training Analyst of the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society (IPA)\, and former Editor of IDE(2021–2024). She holds a PhD in Mental Health from EPM-Unifesp and completed postdoctoral studies in Clinical Psychology at IP-USP. SUMMARY:Ben Hooson: Lacan and Wittgenstein
DESCRIPTION:Workshop With Ben Hooson – In Person Only\n\n\n  \nLacan and Wittgenstein \n  \nBen Hooson will lead a workshop on Jacques Lacan and Ludwig Wittgenstein\, focusing on what Lacan said about the philosopher at a Seminar session in 1970 (a surviving audio recording gives us his exact words). Based on a close analysis of Wittgenstein’s best-known work\, the Tractatus\, Lacan took the philosopher to be “fiercely psychotic”. Remembering Freud’s comment (in his study of Judge Schreber’s memoirs)\, that psychotic writing offers an “endopsychic perception” of psychoanalytic theory\, and remembering that Lacan’s understanding of psychoanalysis sprang from his early work with psychotic patients\, the brief discussion of Wittgenstein in the Seminar gives precious insight into Lacan’s own thinking. \n  \nAbstract: \n  \nIn the Seminar session of 21st January 1970\, Lacan makes a sweeping statement. He says that what philosophers in the western tradition\, from Plato and Aristotle to Descartes\, Kant and Heidegger\, want to do is to save truth: “Ils veulent sauver la vérité.” \n  \nHe then says: \n  \n“This drew one of them\, Wittgenstein\, very far in order to refuse to end up at this: that by making it the rule and the foundation of knowledge\, there is nothing left to say\, nothing\, at least\, that concerns it as such\, so as to avoid this rock – this rock\, where\, for sure\, the author has one affinity with the position of the analyst\, namely\, that he eliminates himself completely from his discourse.” \n  \nThe French text of the Seminar\, published in 1991\, is not faithful to what Lacan said in the passage above (and in several other places). Translated into English\, the text says: \n  \n“This drew one of them\, Wittgenstein\, very far; as far as to end up at this: that by making it the rule and the foundation…” \n  \nConsequently\, we lose Lacan’s point that Wittgenstein went very far in order to refuse (not just to ascertain or maybe even to accept) a situation where\, by making truth into “the rule and the foundation of knowledge”\, we end up with “nothing left to say”. \n  \nWhen we re-instate what Lacan actually said\, Wittgenstein’s far travelling (Lacan means his whole philosophy\, from the Tractatus to the Philosophical Investigations) would be an attempt to accommodate the possibility of saying things that “concern truth as such” – a refusal to accept that it is impossible to do so. \n  \nWhy\, though\, might it ever be impossible to do so? Because of the threat posed by “this rock”? What rock? Lacan does not explain. \n  \nWe naturally think of a rock in the sea\, on which a boat can be wrecked\, and that may be a connotation that Lacan intended. But his principal meaning is different. The semantic field of “roc” in French also covers what in English we call “bedrock” and Lacan had used the French word many times in earlier years when citing a Freudian metaphor: near the end of Analysis Terminable and Interminable Freud refers to the fear of castration as “bedrock”\, meaning that this fear is something that psychoanalysis\, in its work with neurotic subjects\, is unable to break through and go beyond. \n  \nLacan was in no doubt that Wittgenstein’s structure\, judged by his philosophical writings\, was not that of neurosis\, but of fierce psychosis (“une férocité psychotique”). The attitude to castration is\, for Lacan\, the key difference between neurosis and psychosis. The neurotic represses castration; the psychotic forecloses it. Foreclosure is a more radical rejection than repression. But psychotic illness and – Lacan contends – the philosophy of Wittgenstein show that (the fear of) castration is never absent from the psychotic mind. \n  \nWhy foreclosure entails a difficulty with truth; why truth\, understood in the relevant way\, has to do with signifiers; and why the psychotic’s attitude to castration has an affinity with the position of the analyst (Lacan’s claim in the quote above): these issues can be clarified by looking in detail at some key moments in Wittgenstein’s writings and what Lacan has to say about them. \n  \n********************* \n  \nTHERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us in person to discuss ‘Why race and culture matters in clinical practice’.\n\n\n‘Why should we care about race in the consulting room?’ is a series of seminars that aims to bridge the gap between the theoretical discussions on race and culture in psychotherapy and the difficulty of the practical application in clinical practice.These seminars will focus on clinical exchanges from within the consulting room with the aim to create an exploratory space to discuss the dynamic clinical significance of paying attention to race and culture in the consulting room. \nThe Work of Whiteness in the Consulting Room \nIn this seminar\, Helen Morgan will be sharing her thoughts on how the unconscious dimensions of racialisation and racialised identity surface in analytic practice. She will explore how the white liberal therapist can avoid the necessary engagement with their own racism through the defence of disavowal leading to the client having to carry the burden of the work. Helen will be sharing some clinical vignettes which highlight the challenges and responsibilities for practitioners. We hope to create an explorative space where we can freely discuss this and think together. \nSpeakers’ Biography \nHELEN MORGAN is a Fellow of the British Psychotherapy Foundation and a training analyst and supervisor for the British Jungian Analytic Association (BJAA) within the BPF. Her background is in Therapeutic communities with adolescents and in adult mental health. She has written a number of papers on the subject of racism and psychotherapy\, and her book\, The Work of Whiteness. A Psychoanalytic Perspective\, was published in 2021 by Routledge. The series is intended to open up conversations about psychoanalysis by initiating dialogues between academics and psychotherapists\, bringing clinical responses to the academic decolonial work. It does not address the ‘big picture’ of structural\, systemic or institutional racism\, or the continuing underdevelopment of the global South. \nUsing my own experiences and those of others in white-majority societies\, it looks at the legacy of colonialism in examples of ‘low-level’ everyday racism – the ways in which micro-aggressions operate to create a racialised ‘other’ and to ‘put you in your place’ through covert threats\, shame\, humiliation\, infantalisation\, criminalisation and so on. Written in a non-academic style\, it will show that even well-meaning and seemingly benign social interactions may be infused with unconsciously held racist beliefs and stereotypes that are a legacy of colonialism and can have a debilitating effect on the person of colour. I will argue that the task of ‘decolonising’ is a psychological as well as socio-politico-economic process. \n  \n\n\n\n  \nSpeakers’ Biographies \nIvan Ward is the former Deputy Director and Head of Learning at the Freud Museum London\, where he worked for 33 years. Born in Hackney\, London\, in the mid-1950s\, he is a mixed-race father of two girls and author or editor of a number of books and papers on psychoanalytic theory and the applications of psychoanalysis to social and cultural issues. Now semi-retired\, he works part-time on the FreePsy research project at the University of Essex\, UK\, which investigates the past history and current practices of socially engaged\, free and low-cost psychoanalytically-informed therapeutic collectives. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow at UCL Psychoanalysis Unit. Recent publications include: ‘Everyday Racism: Psychological Effects‘ (2022) in The Trauma of Racism: Lessons from the Therapeutic Encounter edited by Beverly J. Stoute and Michael Slevin (Routledge) and ‘Reflections on the object of racism’ (2024) in Journal of Psychosocial Studies Vol. 17 issue 2. Bristol University Press. \nDr Anne Aiyegbusi is a forensic psychotherapist\, group analyst\, supervisor\, organisational consultant and registered mental health nurse. She works part time in the NHS as a principal psychotherapist and group analyst. Anne is also a director\, consultant nurse\, psychotherapist and group analyst with Psychological Approaches CIC\, an independent training and consultancy company which primarily supports service delivery within forensic mental health and criminal justice settings. She is President of the International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy (IAFP) and course convenor for the IGA Diploma in Group Work Practice – Forensic Settings.
