Limits & Liberation in Psychoanalysis: Working with the Frame and Transference

An online workshop with Andie Newman
Ideas around limits, restrictions and constraints are everywhere to be found within psychoanalysis. In this workshop, we will reflect on how limits operate within – and are essential to – the psychoanalytic approach, including thinking about the frame, boundaries and ‘the rules’; and the consequences of restrictions in opening up – or liberating – the space for the work of psychoanalysis to unfold.
Alongside other texts, we will be guided by Freud’s key papers on technique, where he outlines his methodology, and those conditions he considers essential to the treatment, based on his discovery of unconscious processes, including transference and resistance.
We will discuss different approaches to the frame, and address the clinical questions and dilemmas thrown up by the traditional conventions of psychoanalysis, and whether or not we need to hold onto these conventions in a contemporary practice.
